Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced today that German Chancellor Angela Merkel will address a joint meeting of Congress on Tuesday, November 3 at 10:30 a.m.

Chancellor Angela Merkel last visited the Capitol in June 2009. This will be her first address to the United States Congress.

"Congress will warmly welcome Chancellor Merkel to the Capitol next month as part of her visit to the United States," said Speaker Pelosi.  "We look forward to hearing the Chancellor's views on how we can continue to work together to confront international security threats, to implement necessary climate change measures, and to resolve the global financial crisis."

"The Chancellor will be visiting the United States just days ahead of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and Germany's reunification," Pelosi continued. "As we continue to strengthen our relationship, our two nations must renew a continued commitment of confronting the global economic, environmental, and security challenges of the 21st century."

Chancellor Merkel's address will be the first time in 52 years that a German government leader has addressed Congress.
