March 10, 2010

Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi today announced that Clerk of the House Lorraine Miller has named Joe Novotny as the new Reading Clerk for the House of Representatives.  Novotny comes to the role from the House Committee on Education and Labor, where he served as Chief Clerk.

As Reading Clerk for the House, Novotny will be responsible for ensuring that legislative measures debated in the House are clearly articulated to Members of Congress, the American people, and around the world.

"As Reading Clerk, Joe will be the voice of the House of Representatives and will play an integral role in the daily operations of Congress," Speaker Pelosi said.  "Joe brings his experience and professionalism from the Education and Labor Committee, and we are grateful for his service."

"The Clerk's office, along with the Parliamentarian, serve as the ‘institutional memory' of the House," said House Clerk Lorraine Miller.  "Joe's long term dedicated service to the House made him an ideal candidate as a Reading Clerk."

"Joe was an incredibly valuable asset to my staff for nearly 15 years.  His unparalleled integrity and dedication helped our committee advance major policies that are making a difference in the lives of working families," said Chairman George Miller of the House Education and Labor Committee.  "I know Joe will bring the same level of enthusiasm, expertise and steadfast commitment of service to his new role as House Reading Clerk."

Novotny, a native of Chicago, earned a bachelor's degree in Political Communication from George Washington University.

Novotny succeeds Jaime Zapata, who recently left the House of Representatives for the Department of Labor.
