Pelosi: Congress Must Act on Additional Economic Recovery Measures to Create More Jobs

July 18, 2008
Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in reaction to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealing that 12 states and the District of Columbia now have unemployment rates above 6 percent and 45 states have rates significantly higher that of one year ago:

"Rising unemployment across the United States makes it clear that Congress must act on additional economic recovery measures to create jobs and help Americans with rising food and energy costs.

"Seven and a half years of economic mismanagement on the part of the Bush Administration cannot be repaired with one piece of legislation--but the New Direction Congress will work to build bipartisan support for a jobs, relief, and economic recovery package that will help renew Americans' ability to live the American dream, and help get our economy back on track.  We hope the President and Republicans in Congress will join us in this effort."
