Pelosi Dear Colleague on President Trump's Muslim Ban and Press Event Tomorrow

January 30, 2017

January 29, 2017

Dear Democratic Colleague,

President Trump's unconstitutional executive order banning refugees and the citizens of Muslim nations betrays everything the Statue of Liberty and our nation stand for.  The President's action is not only unconstitutional but immoral.  As Pope Francis said, "It's hypocrisy to call yourself a Christian and chase away a refugee or someone seeking help."

At the same time, we have been moved and inspired by the scenes of Americans, including Members of our Caucus, rallying to airports across the nation to demand justice for the men, women and children detained and/or deported under the President's order.  We continue press for answers and demand that the federal court injunction issued last night be honored.

We are witnessing an historic injustice unfold, and we must keep the pressure on.  Tomorrow at 6:00 p.m., House and Senate Democrats will gather for a press event in front of the steps of the Supreme Court to demand the President withdraw his disreputable executive order.  All Members are urged to come to express our solidarity.

This week, Immigration Subcommittee Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren and others will introduce legislation to rescind the Muslim ban, and we are reviewing actions we can take against the President's other immigration executive orders as well.

We are also exploring all legal options, including an Amicus Brief in support of the ACLU.

As Members of Congress, we take a solemn oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.  Democrats intend to honor that oath by fighting the unconstitutional injustice of the President's Muslim ban.

Thank you for your leadership.  Please let us know if you can join us at the Supreme Court steps tomorrow.

best regards,

NANCY
