Pelosi Dear Colleague to Members Ahead of August District Work Period

Dear Democratic Colleague,

As you may know, the Republican Leadership has announced their intention to cancel votes on Thursday and adjourn the House a day early.  It is outrageous that Republicans plan to begin the August recess early, with so many critical issues still needing to be addressed.  Just because we do not have votes, doesn't mean we do not have work to do.

I am deeply disappointed that Republicans are choosing to adjourn the House for nearly six weeks without having passed a robust, long-term highway bill; without having reauthorized the Export-Import Bank that supports so many American jobs; and continuing to block action on the renewed and strengthened Voting Rights Act to protect that most fundamental right in our democracy.

While Republicans adjourn for the earliest August recess in a decade, I hope you will join me as Democrats continue our scheduled events to address our most pressing issues heading into August:

  • Wednesday at 9:00am – House Democrats' August Messaging Meeting;
  • Wednesday at 3:00pm – Leader's Meeting on Iran with former-Bush Administration official Nicholas Burns;
  • Wednesday at 5:00pm – House Democrats' White House working reception with President Obama;
  • Thursday at 10:00am – House Democrats gather on the Capitol steps to call for action on the Voting Rights Act.

We have important work to do on behalf of the American people.  I urge you to join in drawing a sharp contrast with Republicans' continued indifference to the priorities of hard-working American families.

Thank you for your leadership and friendship.

best regards,
