Pelosi: Homeland Security Bill Provides for the Safety and Security of the American People

May 9, 2007

Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on H.R. 1684, the Department of Homeland Security Authorization bill, which the House will vote on this evening:

'This evening, the House will have the opportunity to fulfill our first responsibility as elected officials - to provide for the safety and security of the American people.  The Homeland Security Authorization bill addresses critical funding needs for the Department of Homeland Security, authorizing funding above the President's request in order to address essential priorities that have been underfunded over the past few years.

'This critical legislation provides for our first responders - the brave men and women who risk their safety to protect ours - by restoring funding for grants that allow those on the front lines to prepare and respond to threats or disasters.  With the passage of this bill, we will also increase accountability to strengthen and streamline management, reform contracting practices, and improve oversight.

'Democrats are committed to a strong national security that makes the American people safer and our country more secure.  With this legislation, this House is taking the next step toward a New Direction for a stronger America.'
