Pelosi Names Irv Nathan New General Counsel of the House
Nathan, a senior partner at the law firm of Arnold & Porter, previously served in the Department of Justice as Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Enforcement in the Criminal Division. He also served as Minority Counsel for the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and senior counsel for the House Judiciary Committee. He currently serves, by appointment of the D.C. Court of Appeals, as the Vice Chair of the District of Columbia Board on Professional Responsibility.
'Irv Nathan has an outstanding reputation and record of accomplishment in private practice and in government service' Pelosi said. 'As House General Counsel, he will counsel and represent the House, Members and staff in connection with litigation and other legal matters.'
Nathan said: 'I am honored to have been selected by the Speaker for this challenging assignment and I look forward to working with my new colleagues in the General Counsel's office to provide on a nonpartisan basis the best advice and representation we can for the House of Representatives, the Members, and the staff.'
Nathan will replace the current general counsel, Geraldine Gennet, in November.
After graduating magna cum laude from the ColumbiaUniversityLawSchool, Nathan clerked for Judge Simon E. Sobeloff on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
A native of Baltimore, Maryland and a graduate of the JohnsHopkinsUniversity, Nathan lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife, Dr. Judith A. Walter, who is affiliated with the School of Social Service of The Catholic University of America.
