Pelosi: 'New Direction Congress is Committed to Early Action to Stimulate and Strengthen the Economy'

January 8, 2008
Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today as a growing number of Democratic and Republican economic experts have called for action to strengthen our economy:

'The New Direction Congress is committed to early action to stimulate and strengthen the economy on behalf of the majority of Americans who know the economy is headed in the wrong direction.  We will work to make sure this effort is bipartisan and urge the President to join us.

'Our initiative will assist hard-hit families by promoting consumer confidence, economic growth, and job creation.  We will work for economic security for those with the greatest economic hardships: Americans facing rising unemployment rates and stagnant wages, spiraling costs for health care and loss of coverage, increasing energy prices, and the devastating consequences of the sub-prime mortgage crisis.'
