Pelosi: On Recommendation of Congressman Albio Sires as a Member of Transportation Committee

March 6, 2008
Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced today that the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee voted to recommend Congressman Albio Sires of New Jersey to serve on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, filling the vacancy left by the passing of Congresswoman Julia Carson of Indiana.

The full Democratic Caucus is expected to vote next week on the nomination.

'As a former mayor and state legislator, Albio Sires understands the infrastructure needs of our communities, and his service on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure will do a great deal to help deliver new resources and jobs for New Jersey,' Speaker Pelosi said.  'Repairing America's crumbling infrastructure to get our economy moving and creating jobs is a top priority of the New Direction Congress, and Congressman Sires will be at the center of the debate as a new member of the Committee.'

Said Congressman Sires: 'I am pleased that the Steering Committee recommended I serve as a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and I look forward to helping serve the constituents of my district through this assignment.  The 13th District is a hub in New Jersey's extensive rail system and I look forward to sharing my knowledge and understanding of this critical infrastructure with the committee.'
