Pelosi Remarks Before Meeting with Fed Chairman Bernanke

February 3, 2009
Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke held a photo opportunity at the top of their meeting in the Capitol this afternoon. Below are her remarks:

"Good afternoon. We are pleased to welcome Chairman Bernanke to the Speaker's office to get his thinking on the current state of our economy, of the ideas about how we will go forward in the new Administration to turn the economy around, to create jobs immediately, but also to build a foundation for economic stability as we move forward.

"There are important decisions to make about regulatory reform and other issues and again, from the perspective of the Fed, important for us to have the best thinking that we can have. I'm so pleased with actions taken by the Fed about mortgages and making a new announcement, federal government-wide, in terms of addressing the mortgage crisis in our country. And we can announce that extended for six months initiative for commercial paper and our relationship with central banks in the developed world.

"So again, it's a good time to have a briefing with the chairman of the Fed so that we can share some ideas that are in the interest of stabilizing our economy for the benefit of the American people."
