Pelosi: Republicans Choose Partisanship Over Progress by Blocking 9/11 and Lobbying Reform Bills

June 26, 2007
Washington, D.C.--Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today after Senate Republicans blocked Democratic efforts to send the 9/11 Commission recommendations and lobbying reform bills to conference:

'Once again, Senate Republican leaders have chosen partisanship over progress by blocking consideration of the 9/11 and lobbying reform bills, both of which passed the House and Senate by large bipartisan majorities.

'After failing to take action for years when they controlled Congress, Republican leaders are now preventing the New Direction Congress from implementing the independent 9/11 Commission recommendations that would protect Americans from terrorism.  And while Democrats have passed legislation to make this the most open and accountable Congress in history, Senate Republicans continue to block our efforts to change the way business is done in Washington.

'I urge Senator McConnell and his colleagues to end this obstruction and join with Leader Reid and Congressional Democrats who are working to make America safer and the Congress more accountable to the American people.'
