Pelosi: Senate Republicans Vote Again to Support Bush's 10-Year War and Against Troop Readiness

September 19, 2007
Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today after Senate Republicans blocked an amendment by Senator Jim Webb of Virginia to enhance military readiness:

'The actions taken by Senate Republicans to defeat the Webb amendment run counter to the wishes of the American people.  Once again, Republicans chose to stand with President Bush in support of a 10-year, trillion dollar war in Iraq and against the readiness of our troops, which is essential to our national security.

'The Webb proposal, which the House passed in August under the leadership of Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher, enhances our military readiness by requiring that active duty forces have at least the same amount of time at home as the length of their deployment.'
