Pelosi Statement in Celebration of St. Patrick's Day
'It is a great honor to host today's luncheon. Started by Tip O'Neill after he became Speaker, it became a special tradition between him and another great Irishman: President Ronald Reagan.
'This year, we are again honored to be joined at this luncheon by the President of the United States, and the Taoiseach of Ireland.
'Today, as on every March 17, we gather to recognize the patron saint of Ireland: Saint Patrick.
'In his riveting book, How the Irish Saved Civilization, author Thomas Cahill describes Saint Patrick as having, '...a temper that could flare dangerously when he perceived an injustice - not against him but against another, particularly against someone defenseless. But he had the cheerfulness and good humor that humble people often have. He enjoyed this world and its variety of human beings - and he didn't take himself too seriously. He was, in spirit, an Irishman.'
'There are many of you here today for whom this description is fitting.
'So as we celebrate the contributions of the Irish to America, we recognize that significant among them have been the contributions of Irish Americans to the Congress.
'More than 36 million Americans now trace their past back to Ireland, and because of that, the futures of our two nations will be forever entwined. In that regard, we are honored that the Taoiseach and his distinguished delegation join us here today in a symbol of the lasting friendship between the United States and Ireland.
'Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is a tremendously forward-looking leader. At home, his service as the Tenth Taoiseach of Ireland has been marked by increased economic opportunity and prosperity; around the world, he is known for his leadership on issues ranging from Darfur to climate change. He has been instrumental in the Northern Ireland peace process.
'I don't have Irish grandparents, but I do have Irish grandchildren: Sean, Ryan, and Liam Kenneally.
'They were baptized at Kilquade Church in County Wicklow. My three grandsons always remind me of the exuberant spirit of the Irish people.
'And in closing, to you I offer our favorite Irish blessing: 'Dance as though no one is watching; Love as though you have never loved before. Sing as though no one can hear you; Live as though heaven is on earth.'
'Now we will hear from the leaders of our two great countries: the President of the United States and the Taoiseach.
'I now have the high privilege, distinct honor, and personal pleasure to introduce the President of the United States, President George W. Bush.'
