June 5, 2007

Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the death of former NASCAR Chairman and President Bill France Jr.:

'Millions of NASCAR fans, and indeed sports fans across the country, mourn the passing of Bill France Jr., whose vision and leadership turned the regional sport of NASCAR into the most popular racing series in the country.

'Fueled by his love of racing and shrewd business sense, Bill France guided the rise of NASCAR and its expansion into a multibillion dollar company.  In my home state of California, the sport grew under Mr. France's leadership, where his depth of passion inspired NASCAR's drivers, owners, and fans alike.

'I hope it is a comfort to the many people who loved Mr. France that so many people share their loss and are praying for them at this sad time.'
