Pelosi Statement on the Death of Congresswoman Julia Carson

December 15, 2007
Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the death of Congresswoman Julia Carson of Indiana:

'On behalf of all Members of the House of Representatives, I express our deep sadness over the passing of our friend and colleague, Congresswoman Julia Carson.

'Congresswoman Carson came to Congress after decades of distinguished service to her home state of Indiana. During her time in the House, she was a powerful advocate for the people of Indianapolis, and for all working families throughout our great nation.

'Congresswoman Carson led the charge to honor Rosa Parks with the Congressional Gold Medal. It was a fitting cause for her, as Julia Carson and Rosa Parks shared a quiet determination, a fierce sense of purpose, and a total commitment to the ideal equality, which is our nation's heritage and hope.

'In recent months, Julia Carson faced illness with her characteristic courage and dignity, and in our sadness, we are reassured to know she is now at peace. I hope it is a comfort to the many who loved Congresswoman Carson that so many people grieve their loss and are praying for them in this sad time.'
