Pelosi Statement on the Death of Former Congressman Augustus Hawkins of California

November 12, 2007
Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the death of former Congressman Augustus Hawkins of California:

'In more that a half a century of public service, Congressman Gus Hawkins was a champion for civil rights and the rights of hard-working men and women.  A leader on the Civil Rights Act of 1964, he was instrumental in ensuring that this groundbreaking legislation afforded equal employment to all workers.  Congressman Hawkins built upon these efforts as Chair of the House Education and Labor Committee, where he worked to create economic opportunity and fought for a higher minimum wage and greater rights for America's workers.

'As co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressman Hawkins left a distinguished legacy that is reflected today in a body that continues to serve as the conscience of the Congress.

'I hope it is a comfort to his stepson and stepdaughter that so many people share their loss and are praying for them at this sad time.'
