Pelosi Statement on National Women’s History Museum Bill

May 7, 2014

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the House passed legislation to establish a commission on building the National Women's History Museum:

"Today, the House of Representatives acted to move us one step closer to realizing the dream of building the National Women's History Museum in our nation's capital.  Women in all walks of life have played a central part in shaping the growth and progress of our nation; yet too often, the stories of heroic, pioneering women have been left untold, their voices silenced, their achievements and contributions unrecognized.

"A national museum in Washington, D.C., would be a fitting tribute to the lives of America's women – and their roles in the life of our country.  From the delegates at Seneca Falls to the suffragists marching for the ballot to activists clamoring for equal opportunity and equal pay, our history is filled with women who dared, who demanded their rights, who refused to accept anything less than an America that meets its ideals of equality.  This museum would share their tales with the world.

"With a strong, bipartisan vote, the House made a powerful statement today in support of a national museum.  Yet it is also time to do more.  It is time to acknowledge the contributions of women by empowering them in the workplace with fair pay, paid family and medical leave, and affordable, quality child care.  It is time to reaffirm, in word and deed, the fundamental truth: when women succeed, America succeeds."
