Pelosi Statement on Discharge Petition to Close Terrorist Gun Loophole

December 7, 2015
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after Congressman Mike Thompson filed a discharge petition to force a vote on Republican Congressman Peter King's Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act:

"It is unconscionable that a suspected terrorist can enter a store and leave with the gun of his choice. Yet on three occasions last week, Republicans prevented the House from even debating a Republican Congressman's legislation to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists.

"Congress must close this outrageous terrorist gun loophole and act to strengthen our system of background checks. As Republicans continue to protect suspected terrorists' ability to buy deadly weapons, Democrats are filing a discharge petition to force Republicans to protect the American people.

"Following the horrific attack in San Bernardino and as we mark the solemn anniversary of Sandy Hook, House Democrats will press forcefully for Congress to take up commonsense solutions to address the epidemic of gun violence in our country."
