Pelosi Statement on Harvey Milk Day

May 22, 2016
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today commemorating Harvey Milk Day in the state of California, in honor of what would have been the 86th birthday of the slain civil rights leader and San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk:

"Harvey Milk advanced freedom for all Americans by championing LGBT equality.  His enduring courage in the face of hate and his abiding faith in the beauty of diversity empowered LGBT Americans to be full participants in our democracy.

"Hope was Harvey's greatest gift to our nation.  Through his service, he gave hope to LGBT Americans facing the indignity of discrimination.  Through his selflessness, he gave hope to the cause of justice.  Through his strategic leadership, he gave hope to all who strive to achieve the full promise of our founding ideals.

"As Republicans push their agenda of discrimination in the Congress and statehouses across the nation, San Franciscans and all who seek justice find hope and strength in Harvey's legacy.  That's why House Democrats are fighting to pass the Equality Act, and ensure that every American can be free to be who they are without fear of discrimination or injustice.  Because of Harvey and other LGBT trailblazers, we are making incredible gains for LGBT Americans and we will continue to fight for progress for all."
