Pelosi Statement on Milestone 20 Million Americans Gaining Health Coverage Through ACA

March 3, 2016
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after President Obama announced that the Affordable Care Act has now provided 20 million previously uninsured Americans with new health coverage since the passage of the law in 2010:

"Six years ago, we passed the Affordable Care Act so that affordable health care would be the right of every American, not just the privilege of the few. Today, we celebrate historic progress in delivering on that principle: a milestone 20 million previously uninsured Americans with new health coverage thanks to the ACA.

"The Affordable Care Act is making real the promise of affordable, dependable health coverage across America. This landmark law is empowering millions of students, workers and families with newfound health security and the liberty to pursue their dreams – freed from crushing medical bills, unaffordable premiums, and the dread of being denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions.

"Yet Republicans persist in their obsession with destroying this momentous progress for our nation. Republicans should be ashamed to be working so hard to shatter the health security of 20 million Americans. It is long past time for Republicans to admit the fact of the ACA's success, and join Democrats to strengthen and improve its historic protections."
