Pelosi Statement on Passing of Jacqueline ‘Jacqui’ Ellis

September 22, 2016
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement regarding the passing of long-time House staffer Jacqueline Ellis:

"Today, the House community mourns the tragic loss of a devoted staffer and beloved mentor, Jacqueline Ellis.  Through her nearly 30 years of service in the people's House, Jacqueline expanded diversity on the Hill and inspired countless young people to dedicate their lives to public service.

"When Jacqueline became a House staffer in 1988, there were few people of color in the corridors of the Congress.  Long before she became chief of staff to Congressman Al Green, Jacqueline empowered hundreds of people of color to serve on Capitol Hill.

"Jacqueline was a legend to generations of African American staffers – and a long-time member of the Hill family who worked quietly behind the scenes to expand equality of opportunity and strengthen our democracy.  May it be a comfort to Jacqueline's family and loved ones, that so many share in their grief at this terrible time."
