Pelosi Statement on Supreme Court Decision in Texas Reproductive Rights Case

June 27, 2016
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the Supreme Court's ruling in Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt, rejecting Texas's efforts to undermine a woman's constitutionally protected right to make her own health decisions:

"Today, the Supreme Court struck down a brazen attempt to limit women's access to the comprehensive health care guaranteed them by the Constitution.  This ruling is an important victory for the rights of America's women, but many challenges remain.

"In the Congress, in the courts and in the states, Republicans are engaged in a systematic campaign to dismantle women's right to comprehensive health care, family planning and affordable contraception.  House Republicans' Select Panel to Attack Women's Health continues to set a new standard for misrepresentation and intimidation with conduct that has not been seen in Congress since the days of Joseph McCarthy.

"A woman's health decisions must be her own, in consultation with her family, her physician, and her faith.  Politicians have no business undermining women's constitutional right to make their own reproductive decisions.  Republicans cannot keep inventing ways to deny women access to their constitutional right to comprehensive health care."
