Pelosi Statement on the Spread of Zika in Miami Beach

August 19, 2016
San Francisco – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released this statement after the Governor of Florida and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the spread of the Zika virus in Miami Beach, Florida:

"While Republicans are on a reckless recess, Zika is spreading.  Now, the CDC is warning pregnant women to stay away from part of Miami Beach, one of America's most popular tourist destinations.  And more than 10,000 Americans – including more than 1,200 pregnant women – have confirmed cases of Zika.  Yet, Congressional Republicans refuse to return to Washington to address this growing American public health crisis.

"Zika is a threat to American lives and the future of our children.  The Republican leadership should immediately reconvene the Congress to pass the Senate's bipartisan Zika funding bill, which provides $1.1 billion in emergency resources to fight the Zika virus.  In the face of Republican inaction, this public health crisis continues to spread.

"What better thing do Republicans have to do than protect the American people from the threat of Zika?  Families in Florida and across America have an urgent message for this Congress: do your job.  House Democrats will continue to fight to create a safer, healthier, stronger America for all."
