Pelosi Statement on the Passing of Basil Paterson

April 17, 2014

San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the passing of Basil Paterson, former New York state Senator and Secretary of State, past Vice Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and father of former New York Governor David Paterson:

"Basil Paterson was an icon, an inspiration, and an idealist – a source of pride to his family and a leader of principle and perseverance for the people of New York and our entire country.  A pioneer from start to finish, he helped reshape politics in Harlem and advance the cause of justice throughout his beloved city and state.  All the while, he never lost sight of the values that drove him into public life in the first place: to give back, to improve the lives of his neighbors, to secure equality for all.

"Whether in the New York state capitol, in the ranks of the Democratic Party, alongside his colleagues in Harlem or Mayor Ed Koch in City Hall, Basil acted to break down barriers and build a lasting legacy.  He left a giant footprint on the lives of fellow African Americans and in the life of our nation.

"A dedicated, caring husband, father, and grandfather, Basil Paterson's memory will forever remain a blessing for all who knew him, loved him, and worked with him.  We only hope it is a comfort to wife Portia, his sons David and Daniel, his grandchildren and his entire family that so many share in their grief at this sad time."
