Pelosi Statement on the Passing of Former Congressman Butler Derrick

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the passing of former South Carolina Congressman Butler Derrick:

"Congressman Butler Derrick served the people and the state of South Carolina with dignity, with persistence, with dedication and determination.  He fought on behalf of local workers, of the textile industry, of the economic growth of his community and our country.  He devoted his life to improving the lives of others.

"The families of South Carolina's third district were better off thanks to his lifelong dedication to public service – as an attorney, as a state representative, and as a Member of Congress for two decades.  He approached his battle with cancer the same way he approached his job as a Congressman: with courage, bravery, and strength.

"It was an honor to serve with him and a privilege to know him.  We only hope it is a comfort to his wife, Beverly, his children and his loved ones that so many mourn by their sides at this sad time."
