Pelosi Statement on the Passing of Robert Ball

January 31, 2008
Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the death of Robert Ball, a former Social Security commissioner:

'The millions of American seniors who rely on Social Security and Medicare, and the millions more who will benefit, might not know his name, but they have Robert Ball to thank for helping ensure their health and income security in retirement.  More than many presidents or members of Congress, Robert Ball shaped, protected and strengthened these pillars of retirement security for six decades and our nation owes him a debt of gratitude for his service to America.

'From his first job a Social Security field representative in the 1930s, through his decade-long service as commissioner, to his efforts to defeat privatization in 2004, Robert Ball was the consummate public servant and no one has done more to improve the lives of America's seniors. I hope it is a comfort to Mr. Ball's family and friends that so many people mourn their loss and are praying for them at this sad time.'
