Pelosi Statement on President Obama's Budget

February 26, 2009

Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement in reaction to President Obama's 2010 budget blueprint submitted to Congress today:

"President Obama's first budget submission to Congress is a profile in courage.  The budget confronts the budget deficits the President inherited, restores honesty and eliminates easy gimmicks, makes smart and tough choices to cut ineffective spending and does not put off for another day dramatic reforms that are needed to create jobs and strengthen our economy.  At long last, we have a President whose policies match the clear goals he has articulated for the nation's economy, and has presented a budget that reflects our nation's values of opportunity for all with responsibility from all.

"The President's budget is consistent with his address to Congress this week, which focused on accountability, fiscal responsibility, and investing in education for our children, energy independence to fuel a green economy, and affordable health care to make our economy stronger and Americans healthier.  The President understands that the economic and fiscal crisis he was handed should not shake his faith in the future or further delay solutions most Americans know are overdue.

"America is fortunate to have a leader in the White House who understands the economic and security challenges facing our nation and who is also willing to work with Congress on a bipartisan basis.  Congress will continue to work with the President to accomplish these critical goals."
