Pelosi Statement on Report of President's Commission on Wounded Warriors

July 25, 2007
Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after a presidential commission released its recommendations on improving health care for our wounded soldiers.  Speaker Pelosi will meet tomorrow with the co-chairs of the  President's Commission on Care for America's Returning Wounded Warriors, former Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala and former Senator Bob Dole.

'The Commission on Wounded Warriors report can only serve to better inform the Administration about the pressing health care needs of America's veterans and make the case for the substantial VA health care increases.

'I appreciate Senator Dole and Secretary Shalala's willingness to again serve America. Democrats certainly agree with the report's conclusions that call for 'fundamental changes' in the system and 'aggressive treatment' of Iraq's signature wounds.  That is why we have voted for historic commitments to ensure that America's veterans and troops returning home from IraqAfghanistan receive the quality, timely health care that they were promised and that they deserve.

'With the House-passed VA appropriations bill, which includes the largest increase in veterans funding in the 77-year history of the VA, and the Wounded Warriors bill that has now passed the House and Senate, we will be able to deliver on our promises to America's veterans.'
