Pelosi Welcomes Israeli Prime Minister Olmert to the Capitol

June 19, 2007
Washington, D.C. - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to the U.S. Capitol today ahead of a bipartisan, bicameral meeting.  The Speaker, Congressional leaders and the Prime Minister discussed the current situation in Gaza, the West Bank and the Middle East as a whole.  The Speaker's welcoming remarks follow:

'Although we were very honored when the Prime Minister spoke to the Congress, this is my first opportunity as Speaker of the House to welcome Prime Minister Olmert to the Capitol.

'With the Republican and Democratic leaders gathered here, you see how strong the bipartisanship is for a great U.S.-Israel relationship.  We're honored by the Prime Minister's visit, we look forward to hearing from him about the situation in the Middle East, and I want to yield now, before we hear from Prime Minister Olmert, to Senate Majority Leader Reid.'
