Blog Post
Last night, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke with concerned Americans and offered solutions on behalf of House Democrats at a Live CNN Town Hall moderated by Jake Tapper.  During the event, she discussed the urgency of protecting health care for millions of Americans, combatting President Trump's hateful Muslim and refugee ban, the importance of sanctuary cities and empowering women to stay engaged despite Republican attacks on women's health and reproductive freedoms.

Here are some of the most memorable moments:

On Nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to SCOTUS:

Bustle: Nancy Pelosi's Response To Neil Gorsuch Finally Brings Women's Rights Into The Conversation

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi torched President Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, as "a very hostile appointment" and someone who is "well outside the mainstream of American legal thought" in a televised town hall on Tuesday.

During the live event on CNN, Pelosi painted Gorsuch as a judge who is "hostile to women's reproductive rights," chooses to side with "felons over gun safety" and has handed down rulings that strip the rights of autistic children.

Gorsuch, she claimed, has often come down on the side of corporate America instead of the people. "He's come down against employees' rights, clean air, clean water, food safety, safety in medicine and the rest. If you care about that for your children, he's not your guy," Pelosi said at the town hall.

Pelosi said that Gorsuch's hostility towards protecting those with disabilities with public education was especially troubling to her.

"He has ruled that they don't have the same rights under the IDEA that children— that they could reach their intellectual and social advancement under the law. He has said that doesn't apply to them."

Pelosi said it was Senate Democrats' prerogative to confirm Gorsuch or not, but said House Democrats want "to make sure that this confirmation subjects the candidate to the strongest scrutiny when it comes to honoring the Constitution."

On President Trump's Unconstitutional Refugee and Muslim Ban:

POLITICO: Pelosi jabs Trump during CNN town hall

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi spewed verbal daggers at President Donald Trump on Tuesday night, saying she feels pity for the commander-in-chief and calling him "reckless," "brash" and "so insecure."

"If you detect some impatience in my voice, it's because your family is suffering and our president is reckless, reckless, and his administration is incompetent," Pelosi (D-Calif.) said, answering a question from a Yemeni refugee about Trump's controversial immigration order.

"Refugees have the most stringent vetting of all newcomers to our country," she said.

"We take an oath to support and defend the American people and the Constitution of the United States," Pelosi added of Congress members. "It is our first responsibility."

"We have to be strong and smart, but we don't have to be reckless and rash. [Trump] has no case, in my view, with the refugees."

On Sanctuary Cities:

San Francisco Chronicle: At TV town hall, Pelosi calls Trump administration ‘incompetent'

A woman who tearfully described how her child was tortured and killed by an undocumented immigrant asked Pelosi how she could continue to support sanctuary cities.

"I can't even imagine the pain. I pray for you," Pelosi said. A couple of times during the program she proudly referred to San Francisco as a sanctuary city and said the point is to give immigrants a way to come forward to report crimes without fear of being deported — not to protect criminals.

"We see it as a place where it makes us safer," she said. "You do not turn law enforcement officers into immigration officials."

On Women's Health:

CNN: Pelosi on Gorsuch: 'A very hostile appointment'

When an anti-abortion college student who said her mother chose to give her up for adoption challenged Pelosi, she responded: "You said, my mother chose -- my mother chose. And we want ... people to have that opportunity to choose, as well."
