Republicans' 54th ACA Repeal & Undermine Vote: 'Wrong and Unfair'
Speaker Boehner and House Republicans are poised to dismantle, repeal and undermine the Affordable Care Act today. And on top of conservative National Review expressing opposition, see what prominent groups had to say to the House GOP:
From AFL-CIO:
I urge you to vote against the misnamed Save American Workers Act. This bill will result in lost work hours for 6.5 million workers, and it will cause many to lose their employment-based insurance coverage, resulting in higher costs for government-subsidized health coverage…Proponents of the Save American Workers Act claim they want to help part-time workers by moving the threshold for employer penalties from 30 to 40 hours. But raising the threshold will only move the cliff and actually increase employers' incentive to reduce workers' hours.
From the American Federation of Teachers:
On behalf of the 1.6 million members of the American Federation of Teachers, I urge you to oppose H.R. 30, a bill to repeal the 30-hour-per-week threshold for classification as a full-time employee for purposes of the employer mandate in Affordable Care Act and replace it with 40 hours. If the threshold for coverage is raised from 30 to 40 hours per week, fewer contingent workers will be covered, making their lives and wages more insecure. This is wrong and unfair. Rather than embracing the spirit of the ACA to help expand healthcare for all working families, this unwarranted change would subvert the law's intent to cover more Americans and would close off a much-needed health insurance option.
From the National Education Association:
On behalf of the three million members of the National Education Association, and the students they serve, we urge you to vote NO on the Save American Workers Act of 2015 (H.R. 30), scheduled for a floor vote this week. Votes associated with this issue may be included in NEA's Report Card for the 114th Congress…We oppose the bill because we believe it would create a disincentive for employers to provide health care coverage, negatively impacting employer-sponsored health insurance and harming families, children and educators who need coverage. The changes contemplated in this bill, however, would simply shift the hours-related context in which…common errors take place [and] can lead to exaggerated responses that hurt students, workers, and families alike. Unfortunately, H.R. 30 would just shift the hours-related focal point for such errors.
From Consumers Union:
Consumers Union urges you to oppose changing the Affordable Care Act's (ACA) definition of full time work from a 30-hour per week threshold to 40 hours… Raising the full-time threshold to 40 hours per week would reduce access to employer-provided insurance coverage.
From YWCA:
On behalf of the YWCA USA, one of the nation's oldest and largest women's organizations, I am writing to urge you to oppose the Save American Workers Act (H.R. 30). This bill would reduce women's access to health care coverage and significantly increase the deficit… The YWCA is particularly concerned about the number of women who will become uninsured or lose employer based health care coverage as a result of H.R. 30. We are equally alarmed that this measure, according to the CBO would increase the deficit by $53.2 billion over the next 10 years and increase the number of uninsured.
From the International Brotherhood of Teamsters:
We urge you to vote against H.R. 30 when it comes to the House floor…this legislation will cause millions of workers to lose work hours and it will cause many employees to lose their employment-based health insurance coverage.
From the National Women's Law Center (NWLC):
Save American Workers from H.R. 30…These are four reasons H.R. 30 is bad for American women, American workers and American families… The Save American Workers Act of 2015 puts millions of American workers at risk of losing full-time work, takes away employer health insurance and raises the federal deficit. I don't think "save" means what they think it means.
The Affordable Care Act is working: millions of Americans are enjoying new found and newly affordable health security, and the uninsured rate among U.S. adults has dropped to a record low 12.9 percent! Republicans should abandon their attempts to repeal and undermine the Affordable Care Act jeopardizing the health security of millions.
