Speaker Boehner, Enough with the Uncertainty on the Ex-Im Bank

July 24, 2014

Despite the critical role the Export-Import Bank plays in the U.S. economy – Speaker Boehner and House Republicans have made no effort to bring a reauthorization bill to the floor without which the Ex-Im Bank will expire in 68 days. But pressure on the GOP is growing…

In Bloomberg yesterday:

House Speaker John Boehner is getting pressure to reauthorize the U.S. Export-Import Bank from…manufacturers in and around his southwestern Ohio district…

About 200 Ohio companies have been urged to contact Boehner, and a General Electric Co. (GE) aviation subsidiary with 1,000 employees living in his district is…pushing him to oppose members of his party who want to shut the bank…"We think it's an issue that deserves to be voted on, and the efforts to block it are very disturbing to us," said Thomas Norwalk, vice chairman of the Southern Ohio District Export Council…

These Ohio voices are added to an already loud chorus calling for reauthorization:

Ex-Im is also good for U.S. taxpayers because it is financially self-sustaining. In fact, over the past five years, on top of creating or sustaining one million American jobs…Failure to reauthorize the agency's operations will place U.S. companies at a serious disadvantage, which would inevitably lead to fewer exports and the loss of thousands of jobs in our states. We strongly urge you to support U.S. exports and jobs by approving legislation that reauthorizes the Export-Import bank. It is the right thing to do for our economy, companies and workers.

From Governor Rick Perry:

I encourage you to reauthorize the U.S, Export-Import Bank (Ex-Im Bank) before its charter expires later this year… Failure to reauthorize the agency's operations could place Texas and many. U.S. companies at a serious competitive disadvantage in the global marketplace… It is the right thing to do for our national economy, our companies and our workforce.

From Governor Pat McCrory:

I encourage you to carefully consider the best course of action…

From Governor Rick Scott:

The reauthorization of the Ex-Im bank is key to the continued exporting success of companies…without the competitive advantage the bank provides, both export sales and jobs could be lost…I strongly encourage you to reauthorize the Ex-Im Bank…it is the right thing to do for our economy, our companies, and our workforce.

From Governor Jack Dalrymple:

If Ex-Im is not reauthorized and reformed…many American companies put at a significant disadvantage in global markets, resulting in lost sales and lost jobs. I urge you to support Ex-Im's swift reauthorization and reform.

From Governor Nikki Haley:

[I] urge you to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank…before its chapter expires this year…Ex-Im is a vital export finance tool to the businesses in our state – at no cost to American taxpayers.

Failure to reauthorize the agency's operations…will place American companies at a serious disadvantage…

We believe that Congress should move forward with a multi-year reauthorization of Ex-Im that provides certainty and stability for U.S. manufacturers and exporters of all sizes…we respectfully request that you work with all stakeholders to expedite consideration of Ex-Im reauthorization to ensure job creators in our districts have the certainty they need to compete in the global marketplace.

Given our nation's fragile economic recovery, we must continue to promote U.S. exports and create American jobs and not disadvantage U.S. manufacturers in a competitive global marketplace.

Failure to reauthorize Ex-Im would amount to unilateral disarmament in the face of othergovernments' far more aggressive export credit programs…

If Ex-Im is not reauthorized…American companies would be put at a unique disadvantage in global markets, resulting immediately in lost sales and lost jobs. U.S. businesses of all sizes would be deprived of a vital financing source at a time when boosting exports is increasingly vital to growing our nation's economy and jobs.

We urge you to support Ex-Im's swift reauthorization.

Speaker Boehner, it's time to take swift action. Enough with the uncertainty.
