Speaker Boehner's Education Hypocrisy
Speaker Boehner. When you look at schools in these inner cities, these families are trapped in bad schools that don't provide a real education, and look what you get: Chuck, we have 50 years of liberal policies to help the very people that we want to help.
Chuck Todd. What works?
Speaker Boehner. Educating more of our kids.
But apparently the Speaker and GOP's solution to this is slashing more funds for education. The Republican Budget Conference plan passed just this past week...
- leads to harmful outcomes such as 46,000 children losing access to Head Start and thousands fewer medical and scientific research grants;
- guts current policy support for higher education by about $200 billion over 10 years;
- eliminates the $2,500 tax credit that helps over 10 million low and moderate income students pay for college each year;
- freezes the maximum Pell Grant forever, eliminating nearly $85 billion for Pell Grant increases Congress already enacted and paid for
Bottom line: Speaker Boehner and the Republican Party can pay lip service to this essential matter, but they prefer advancing the ultra-wealthy's priorities instead of joining Democrats to improve our education system -- clearly, as demonstrated in their recipe for national decline, they have shown little interest in investing in our nation's future.
