Last Monday Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Chairman Edward Markey of the Select Committee for Energy Independence and Global Warming discussed climate change and the Energy Independence and Security Act at a press conference at Stanley Elementary School in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Speaker Pelosi lauds Waltham 'green' school

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will visit Stanley Elementary School today to laud the school's energy-saving techniques and tout the benefits of using renewables and "green" technologies.

Pelosi will be joined by U.S. Rep. Ed Markey, who serves as chairman of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, U.S Rep. Niki Tsongas as well as several local officials.

Stanley Elementary is a silver Leadership in Energy and Energy Design- certified building and is equipped with with solar panels that save the school $33,000 annually in energy costs. The school also incorporates a variety of other energy-saving methods, Principal Marcia Pertuz said Friday.

Markey, D-7th, said in a statement that the school sets a welcome example.

"The environmental and economic benefits gained by building schools like William Stanley Elementary are the reason the speaker and I have worked on groundbreaking energy legislation in Congress," Markey said. "The children of William Stanley will be the 'green generation' and it's our responsibility to lead the way by spurring the green revolution."
