Top Republican: immigration reform ‘would pass today’
Despite Speaker Boehner's fervent wishes, immigration reform isn't going away. Senator Dean Heller is the latest Republican to call out House Republicans, saying this:
"I believe…if you put comprehensive immigration reform on the floor of the House of Representative, it would pass today. It will pass and every member of our House delegation will vote for it." [2/19]
House Democrats think so, too. That is why we have introduced H.R.15, which has 197 cosponsors, including 3 Republicans.
Who exactly does the Speaker of the House need to hear from before he'll bring it to the floor when the following screams passage:
- Poll after poll shows across party lines the American people support immigration reform, including in favor of a pathway to citizenship;
- Religious groups and business groupshave called on the Republican Party to pass immigration reform;
- Newspaper editorials across the country are fed up with the GOP's excuses and demand swift action;
- Members of the Republican Conference are ready to move on immigration, but are waiting on GOP leaders.
Is this what the Speaker is listening to? It's time to put an end to the excuses and to this "dark vein of intolerance." Give the American people a vote and pass bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform now.
