U.S. Conference of Mayors to Congress: #RaiseTheWage Now!

The U.S. Conference of Mayors recently joined the surging consensus of Americans calling for a raise to the nation's minimum wage.  In fact, they have introduced a resolution emphasizing immediate action, arguing that:

  • The nation's mayors are committed to providing economic growth and opportunity within their cities;
  • Increasing the spending ability of minimum wage workers through raising the federal minimum wage to $10.10 would increase the demand for goods and services and generate $22 billion in economic activity;
  • The U.S. Conference of Mayors has long promoted an agenda that would build an economy that works for everyone;
  • The United States Conference of Mayors is prepared to work with the Administration and Congress to further address the economic challenges facing our nation's cities

It's been over 15 months since House Democrats introduced legislation to increase the stagnant wages of millions of Americans.  Yet congressional Republicans continue to overlook the:

  • 25 million people who will see a pay raise in this legislation is enacted;
  • 600 prominent economists, including seven Nobel Prize winners, who stress that an increase could have a small stimulative effect on the economy;
  • Thousands of jobs it'll create;
  • Nearly 5 million people who will be lifted out of poverty;
  • Overwhelming support from a majority of Americans and small businesses;
  • 1 million veterans who will benefit from a minimum wage increase;
  • 15 million working women, including 2.4 million African American women and 3.3 million Latina women, who will see a raise if the minimum wage is increased;

Americans want to know why congressional Republicans continue to reject its benefits and when will they end their obstruction?
