What Will Speaker Ryan's Republican Anti-Immigrant Amicus Brief Say?
March 14, 2016
The House Republican Conference is at it again with their dysfunction, distraction and obstruction. As Donald Trump continues to fan the flames of dangerous anti-immigrant anger, House Republicans are doubling down on their own radical assaults on hard-working immigrant families across America. This week, Speaker Ryan and House GOP Members will use up another opportunity to show their contempt toward the immigrant community – voting on a resolution that permits them to file an anti-immigrant amicus brief against President Obama's discretion to target criminals in our country.
Yet they won't tell the House or the American people what they're planning to say in it. It's no wonder Republicans are shy about admitting to the appalling language they use to describe hard-working immigrant families. We can only imagine which of Republicans' hateful greatest hits will make their way into this anti-immigrant amicus brief:
- Will it call for the round-up and deportation of DREAMers, as Republicans have consistently voted in favor of?
- Will it call for the end of birthright citizenship, as House Republicans held a committee hearing to support?
- Will it use more hateful slurs to describe Latino immigrants, as House Republicans' Anti-Immigrant Spokesman Rep. Steve King and other GOP Members, did – including when they said immigrants have "calves the size of cantaloupes"; they're "wetbacks," "dogs," "livestock"; they come from a "violent civilization"?
- Will it call for building a wall along our southern border with Mexico?
- Will it call for tearing apart families with American citizens, separating parents from their American children?
Meanwhile, House and Senate Democrats last week filed our own amicus brief with the Supreme Court in support of the Immigration Executive Actions – and we will continue fighting for comprehensive immigration reform.
