With the passing of Ambassador Holbrooke, our country has lost a brilliant and respected diplomat. He was a strong fighter for peace throughout the world and an advocate of American values at the United Nations.

All of us who have worked with him admired his great intellect and tenacity to resolve conflict.

Today, a District Court judge in Virginia ruled one provision of the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional. Fourteen other judges have already ruled against similar lawsuits and the judge today refused to freeze implementation of the law during the appeals process, meaning Americans already benefiting from health insurance reform – or set to benefit soon – will not be affected.

This year's Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded to Chinese human rights activist Liu Xiaobo, who last year was sentenced to 11 years in prison for "inciting subversion of state power" after he authored Charter 08, an online petition by Chinese citizens calling on the Chinese government to improve its policies on democracy and human rights.

The failure of the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' repeal, as part of the Defense Authorization bill, on a procedural vote in the Senate is a serious disappointment to the many who have worked so hard to close the door on a fundamental unfairness.

House Democrats share the President's commitment to providing the middle class with a tax cut to grow the economy and create jobs. The House passed a bill last week to provide tax cuts for all Americans but not a bonus tax cut to millionaires and billionaires. The extra tax cut for the top 3 percent does not create jobs and increases the deficit.

This afternoon, the House passed a resolution congratulating imprisoned Chinese democracy advocate Liu Xiaobo on being awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize (H.Res. 1717) by a vote of 402-1.

Congressional Republicans have been holding tax cuts for everyone (on all income up to $250,000) hostage to give a bonus tax cut to millionaires and billionaires. These bonus tax cuts do not create jobs and add tens of billions to the deficit.
