Today, House Republican Leader John Boehner gave a regrettably partisan speech before the American Legion in which he continued to criticize President Obama's Iraq, security, and veterans' policies, even as the President is keeping his promise to bring home all combat troops from Iraq and strongly supporting our troops.

Leader Boehner's partisan rhetoric is an attempt to distract the American people from the failed Republican record on troops and veterans—and their plans to put tax cuts for the wealthy ahead of the needs of our troops and Veterans.

Last night, Roll Call reported that a new book by House Republican leaders Eric Cantor (R-VA), Paul Ryan (R-WI), and Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), includes the Ryan budget proposal to drastically privatize and cut Social Security and turn Medicare into a voucher system. This is more evidence that Congressional Republicans will jeopardize the retirement security for millions of American workers and their families:

Today, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that more than 1 million Medicare beneficiaries have already received their one-time, tax-free checks of $250 to help pay for prescription drug costs. These checks will continue to be mailed out as seniors hit the 'donut hole' prescription drug coverage gap, with an estimated 4 million seniors and people with disabilities receiving this assistance over the next several months.

Five years ago, America watched Hurricane Katrina tear through homes, communities, and neighborhoods across the Gulf Coast. This natural disaster decimated New Orleans and other cities and towns, destroyed buildings, and displaced local families. When the levees fell, a human tragedy emerged – a story of poverty too often ignored; and an uncertain future awaited those left without standing houses or schools or businesses.

In the wake of that horrific storm, we made a solemn pledge: we would not forget the people of the Gulf Coast.
