Today, the House passed a resolution by Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) expressing condolences to the families of the individuals killed during storms and floods in Georgia this past week and expressing gratitude to all of the emergency personnel who continue to work with unyielding determination to meet the needs of Georgia's residents.

However, research shows that small businesses will benefit significantly from health insurance reform in a number of ways including lower health care costs and saved jobs.

Tonight, the House passed the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act (H.R. 3548) by a vote of 331-83. The legislation provides up to 13 additional weeks of unemployment benefits to workers in high unemployment states who are about to run out of benefits -- helping at least 300,000 Americans who will exhaust all of their benefits by the end of September and over 1 million who will run out of unemployment by the end of December.

Health insurance reform opponents, including House Republican Leader John Boehner, continue to spread myths about America's Affordable Health Choices Act, including the ridiculous myth that the Obama Administration has issued a "gag order" on insurance companies telling seniors how health insurance reform will affect them. That is not true.

President Obama reaffirmed America's commitment to transition to a clean energy economy that creates jobs and reduces global warming pollution. The President emphasized the urgency of taking action at home and working together with our global partners to reduce emissions worldwide.
The New Direction Congress has laid the groundwork for this transition through our historic investments in fuel efficient vehicles, and renewable energy and efficiency. In the House, we have passed the Waxman-Markey clean energy jobs bill.
