Today marks the 100th day since President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act into law. President Obama released a report entitled 100 Days, 100 Projects saying, "one hundred days ago, in the midst of the worst economic crisis in half a century, we passed the most sweeping economic recovery act in history -- a plan designed to save jobs, create new ones, and put money in people's pockets.

From our hotel rooms we can look over Shanghai, an enormous, world-class city of modern, architecturally innovative skyscrapers as far as the eye can see. There are cranes everywhere, and the city is getting ready to host the largest World Expo in history next year. Everyone we met, from the Mayor of Shanghai, to company executives, to building materials experts, emphasized with great pride how green building techniques and energy efficiency are integrated into buildings starting in the design phase.

Court upholds Prop. 8 but lets marriages stand

California voters legally outlawed same-sex marriage when they approved Proposition 8 in November, but the constitutional amendment did not dissolve the unions of 18,000 gay and lesbian couples who wed before the measure took effect, the state Supreme Court ruled today.

On this Memorial Day, we remember those brave Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety and security of our nation, and take great pride in the service of our men and women in uniform, and thank them with deeds, not just words.

In the first five months of this year, the New Direction Congress accomplished a great deal for our men and women in uniform and for our veterans, building on what we did last Congress.

A report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) this year found that the Pentagon's 96 largest acquisition programs had cost overruns of $296 billion and were on average 22 months behind schedule -- $296 billion is more than the amount spent on salaries and health care for the entire American military for two full years.
