There is no time to delay. The American people need action on the economy now. Despite the worsening economic crisis, Republican leaders in Congress keep saying 'No' to legislation designed to help speed relief to America's families, workers and small businesses.

This chart compares the job loss so far in this recession to job losses in the 1990-1991 recession and the 2001 recession -- showing how dramatic and unprecedented the job loss over the last 13 months has been. Over the last 13 months, our economy has lost a total of 3.6 million jobs -- and continuing job losses in the next few months are predicted.

Today, the Department of Labor announced American job losses totaled 598,000 in January--the worst month of job losses since 1974 and the 13th straight month of job losses. They also announced the unemployment rate hit 7.6%, its highest point in 16 years.

Speaker Pelosi released the following statement in reaction to Department of Labor figures that reveal a 26-year high in initial unemployment claims last week. First-time filings increased by 35,000 to 626,000 for the week ending January 31.
