Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, and Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles B. Rangel released the following statement today on the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax of 2008 (H.R. 5351), which will be voted on in the House next week. The legislation invests in clean, renewable energy and energy efficiency and pays for that investment by repealing unnecessary tax breaks to big energy companies.

Our nation's budget should chart a course that reflects America's values, make critical investments in our future and be fiscally responsible. The budget the President submitted earlier this month fails to meet those standards. The President's misguided budget cuts health care for seniors and working families, raises health care costs for Veterans, leaves a staggering legacy of debt that our young people will inherit and slashes energy assistance - all at a time of rising prices and a slowing economy. And once again, the President does not fully account for the true cost of the war in Iraq.
