Today's emergency rate cut by the Federal Reserve Board indicates a commitment across all levels of government to revitalize the economy, restore confidence in the markets, and help Americans struggling with soaring bills for gasoline, groceries, housing and home heating.

Congress is also taking action -- working as quickly as possible in a bipartisan way with the Bush Administration to stimulate the economy by putting money into the hands of people who will spend it.

As we reflect on the contributions of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., we recommit ourselves to his ideal of equality, which was the lifework of Dr. King and is both our nation's heritage and our hope.

Dr. King wisely stated that 'a genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.' He courageously became that consensus builder, stressing spirituality over strife, and unity over violence.

CHAIRMAN WAXMAN SCHEDULES HEARING TO EXAMINE PRESERVATION OF WHITE HOUSE E-MAILS

WASHINGTON, DC -- On February 15, the Committee will hold a hearing to investigate White House compliance with the Presidential Records Act. Statements made at today's White House press briefing contradict information provided to the Committee, which revealed that a 2005 White House analysis found no archived mail for hundreds of days between 2003 and 2005.

Today the House passed H.R. 3524, HOPE VI Improvement and Reauthorization Act, by a vote of 271-130. HOPE VI is a valuable program which revitalizes severely distressed and obsolete public housing projects. In HOPE VI projects, every government dollar has leveraged at least two private sector dollars, and these projects have been credited with helping transform and revitalize communities across the country. Since its establishment in 1992, the HOPE VI Revitalization Grant program has awarded 237 grants to 127 cities.
