Today, Reps. Chris Murphy (CT-5) Anna Eshoo (CA-14) led an effort to organize Members of Congress to send letters to Republican Governors to ask them to use their unique positions to call President Bush and ask him to put down the veto pen. The President is threatening to veto bipartisan legislation to expand the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) program to cover ten million children nationwide.

As the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, the United States must lead by example and take the necessary steps to reduce greenhouse gases. An effective initiative must be based on mandatory standards to protect our planet, not the voluntary goals and incremental approach supported by the Administration.
While I look forward to being briefed on the results of the President's meetings with the world's biggest polluter nations, I hope that his efforts will not be used to circumvent the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bali.

Today Chairman Waxman of the Oversight Committee wrote to State Department Inspector General Howard Krongard regarding reports that senior staff attempted to coerce employees not to cooperate with the Committee's inquiry and threatened their jobs and careers. Investigators working for Howard Krongard, the State Department Inspector General, say they were told "Howard can fire you" and "You have no protection against reprisal" if they cooperate with the Oversight Committee's investigation.

The House has just passed the Flood Insurance Reform and Modernization Act of 2007 by a vote of 263-146. The bill reauthorizes for five years the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which was brought to the fore after Hurricane Katrina.

Last week, Speaker Pelosi sent the College Cost Reduction and Access Act to the President for his signature. The legislation will help millions of students and families pay for college at no new cost to taxpayers, boosting college aid by roughly $20 billion over the next five years.

On February 7, 2007, the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform held a hearing to on performance and accountability of private military contractors in Iraq. The hearing included the examination of one prominent case study: a pivotal event of the Iraq War in which four Blackwater USA security contractors were ambushed and killed in Fallujah on March 31, 2004, while escorting a convoy.
