The Education and Labor Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions is currently holding a hearing, "Ensuring Collective Bargaining Rights for First Responders: H.R. 980, The Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act of 2007." This legislation will enable firefighters and police officers to discuss and negotiate workplace issues with their employers.

Today we pay tribute to the brave souls of Tiananmen Square, who 18 years ago defied the powers of their day to demand the liberties and freedom to which all people everywhere are entitled.

We remember how Chinese students, workers and citizens marched in peace, how they raised a Goddess of Democracy in the image of our own Statue of Liberty, and how they quoted our own Founding Fathers.

We remember the courage of the heroes of Tiananmen and we reaffirm our commitment to the principles of freedom and democracy of which they dreamed.

This morning Congressman Ed Markey (MA-7), Chair of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, delivered the Democratic Radio Address. In his address, Chairman Markey discusses global warming and the recent Congressional delegation to Greenland and Europe to see firsthand its adverse impact on our planet. He concludes the address saying, "We are not waiting for President Bush. Democrats are insisting on a new direction, one based on technology, not ideology - on optimism, not fear.

Having returned this afternoon from a bipartisan fact-finding mission to Greenland and European capitals that focused on global warming, I have to say I am disappointed by the President's announcement today. After years of inaction and denial, on the eve of the G-8 Summit, the President has finally acknowledged the severity of the global warming threat and agreed that we need a follow-up agreement to the Kyoto Protocol that he has spent most of his Administration studiously ignoring.
