Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement marking the 57th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act, signed into law by President Kennedy on June 10, 1963:
"Today, our nation marks 57 years since President Kennedy took the historic first step toward achieving equal pay for equal work for America's women when he signed the Equal Pay Act into law. More than half a century later, we have made great progress, yet working women, on average, still earn only 80 cents for every dollar earned by a man. Unfortunately, President Kennedy's prescient words that, ‘much remains to be done to achieve full equality of economic opportunity,' remain true for too many Americans.
