Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement marking the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, which occurred on June 4, 1989:

"Thirty years ago, in Tiananmen Square, the government of China brutally massacred its own people as they stood up for the dignity and human rights that they deserve. Today, we remember the courage and sacrifice of the students, workers and ordinary citizens who peacefully defied a repressive regime to demand an end to decades of persecution, oppression and harassment. While the tanks and troops crushed their protest, they could not extinguish the flame of freedom that burned in their hearts or halt the unstoppable movement for liberty and justice that they inspired.

San Francisco — Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on Louisiana's new abortion ban, which prohibits abortion at as early as six weeks, before most women know they are pregnant, and does not contain exceptions for cases of rape or incest:

"Louisiana's draconian new abortion ban is the latest in a heartbreaking and nationwide assault against women's reproductive freedoms. These bans show a staggering lack of respect for women: for their health, for their control over their bodies and for their right to make decisions about the timing and size of their families.

"Every woman, everywhere has the constitutional and moral right to basic reproductive health care. We will fight these immoral and dangerous attacks on women's health and freedoms with all our strength."

San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement on President Trump's threat to impose escalating new tariffs on goods from Mexico:

"Yesterday, the President demonstrated his lack of knowledge of policy and process in our trade relations by taking premature action to advance the USMCA. Later in the day, he demonstrated a further lack of understanding of the recklessness of his actions by threatening tariffs on Mexico. The President's threat is not rooted in wise trade policy but has more to do with bad immigration policy on his part.

"We hope that the President will join us in bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform, be strategic about our trade relationships and recognize the importance of the U.S.-Mexico relationship.
