Leader Pelosi.  Good morning. This week the President announced his Supreme Court nominee, who will seek to reverse generations of progress for Americans' health care and for Roe v. Wade.

Leader Pelosi.  Thank you very much. Thank you, Congresswoman [Kathy] Castor for your extraordinary leadership as a member of the Environmental Message Group. Donald McEachin, Earl Blumenauer and our distinguished Ranking Member of the Natural Resources Committee, Mr. [Raúl] Grijalva, as well as Jared Huffman, all working hard on this issue. But we have an environmental bill on the Floor that they are managing so they’ll be in and out.

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after House Republicans adopted an outrageous anti-LGBTQ amendment to the minibus funding bill for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services and Education, which allows federally-funded child welfare placing agencies to turn away qualified prospective parents on the basis of sexual orientation and religion:

Today, House Republicans unveil their new slogan “Better Off Now” – trying to convince the American people they are better off now because of GOP policies.

“President Trump’s brazen insults and denigration of one of America’s most steadfast allies, Germany, is an embarrassment. His behavior this morning is another profoundly disturbing signal that the President is more loyal to President Putin than to our NATO allies.

“Yet again, the Trump Administration is trying to trick Americans into buying junk health insurance plans and making it harder for families to enroll in real affordable, quality health coverage. 

“The President’s selection is a clear and disrespectful assault on the fundamental rights of women and on the quality, affordable health care of the American people.  Judge Kavanaugh’s long history of opposition to the full, fundamental right of every woman to make her own decisions about her body, family and health care poses a grave threat to women’s rights and to our Founders’ promise of liberty and justice for all.  If he proves as eager an executor of the President’s bitter campaign to overturn Roe v. Wade and sabotage Americans’ health care as his record suggests, a woman’s right to choose will be repealed and the health coverage and economic security of 130 million Americans with pre-existing conditions will be in grave peril.
