Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the tragic passing of Congresswoman Louise Slaughter: “Paul and I are heartbroken by the passing of Congresswoman Louise Slaughter. In her lifetime of public service and unwavering commitment to working families, Congresswoman Slaughter embodied the very best of the American spirit and ideals. With her passing, the Congressional community has lost a beloved leader and a cherished friend. “Louise was a trailblazer. The first woman to ever chair the powerful House Rules Committee, she used her leadership position to fight for women and working families in New York and across the country. Her strong example inspired countless young women to know their power, and seek their rightful place at the head of the decision-making table. She took great pride in representing the area around the historic Seneca Falls Convention, and embraced the future with her forceful engagement on social media. “Louise never forgot her roots as the daughter of a Kentucky blacksmith. She brought the grace and grit of her Southern background to her leadership in the Congress, building bridges and breaking down barriers all with her beautiful accent. Louise could be fiercely debating on the Floor in the morning, and singing in harmony with her colleagues across the aisle in the evening. “Her tireless leadership was invaluable to passing legislation to expand access to affordable, high-quality health care and to help young people climb the ladders of opportunity with a good education. She made it her mission to help every man and woman chase their American Dream. “It was my great privilege to serve with her and to benefit from her friendship and wise counsel for 30 years. Her loss will be deeply felt. May it be a source of comfort to Louise’s three daughters, Megan, Amy and Emily, and her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchild, that so many around the country mourn with them.”

“San Francisco is an inseparable part of the story of HIV/AIDS,” said Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. “It is fitting and deeply inspiring that advocates, researchers and survivors will return to the Bay Area for the 2020 International AIDS Conference. San Francisco has long been the center of HIV/AIDS research and advocacy, and a trailblazing global leader in public health response, innovative prevention strategy and community-based models of care. Our city will never forget what it took to come from those darkest times when many of us were going to two funerals a day, to a time when we are celebrating weddings and retirements of people with HIV.”
